Isn't this conversation interesting? We proceed as if a certain childhood innocense is still in play when in reality, we are being monitored by Uncle Sug. Perhaps my skepticism is misplaced on this topic but I suspect that when the internet was being conceived and created, someone in a position of leadership and vision recognized the need to be vigilant in the execution of national security, way before the Bush Administration got credit for being the heavy-handed First Amendment deniers! The very thought of naivete is an understatement when it comes to national security.

Well done, Wendy. I appreciate your insight and candor. It helps to know that those of us who use the web for copy get a larger return on our investment than relying on the old ways. I have clients across the web in locations I would have never tapped had I relied on the old ways of doing business. Keep up the good work.

Regrettably, your point is well taken. In my career experience, Talent Acquistion is sacrificed for the Lowest Bid. Recruiters often recruit and hire for the flavor of the week and think short term while the organization suffers. Yet in hiring Recruiters who have a clue what Talent is, those who recruit and hire the Recruiters must bear some responsibility for looking long term. Like the photo at the end of your post, the proof is in the pudding. Your insights serve us all well. Thanks.

Personally, I think we should invest in Transporter Beam Technology as a viable option for our transportation needs. Forget the tire gauges and gas guzzling automobiles - just beam me up, Scotty.

You make an excellent point with this post. The real challenge is re-thinking priorities. For many companies, sending an employee or two to a three day conference in Las Vegas would rival the cost of teleconferencing. Convincing the leadership of the multitude of possibilities that teleconferencing provides has to demonstrate a significant return on their investment. The more it is utilized, the less expensive it becomes. Just do the math.

Fast Talk Response -

I think there is generally a kind of inverted relationship between the economy and the need for some form of escapism. Clearly the Dark Knight is one of those fantasties that indulges one's sense of hope in a very dark and gloomy time. I have seen the The Dark Knight and will see it again - I think it is that good!

Sometimes I think many of us forget than only a generation ago, families lived together, sometimes three or four generations under one roof. I still remember my great, grandmother living when I was in the 1st Grade while living with my parents and grandparents. To be sure, it was a big house, but we had at least three generations living together.

Isn't it amazing how some folks just want to please the boss and overfunction for others? I wonder, though, how much more productive employees can be after a sixty hour week. I remember working in a manufacturing plant as a college student and how the boss frowned upon me quiting at 5:00 pm to attend night school. There was the expectaton that I should be there, like my Dad, 12-15 hours a day. He died the day before his 58th birthday from a stroke but not before getting 26 hours of overtime in that week.

Well said. And you are still welcome to sit in my garden and just. . .do whatever you like or don't do anything at all. If I have learned one thing about living at the beach this past year it is that there is a lot to be said without ever speaking a word. J.

Like you, about a month ago I weighed in on this issue and suggested that maintaining family ownership beyond the third and fourth generations is a real challenge. It doesn't surprise me Auggie sold out just based on the generational issue.
I also suggested for A-B to sell out would be an act of treason. Hyperbole to be sure, but as more and more American businesses sell out to foreign investors and American workers' livelihood is sacrificed for profit, it just makes me wonder whether this constitutes crimes against the state!
