Comment on Node ant

According to Sara Corbett's fascinating piece, "Can the Cellphone Help End Global Poverty?" (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/13/magazine/13anthropology-t.html?_r=1&or...), cellphone ownership in Africa is doing more to improve living standards than any governmental aid to date. Not only are farmers better gaging and negotiating crop prices with a simple phone call, entrepreneurial women are earning income by selling access to a neighborhood cellphone, and cellphone minutes are fast becoming the newest currency (and phones as mobile banks) for Africans.

Green Fashion: Is It More Than Marketing Hype?

The zebra-like, black-and-white, elongated shrug keeps disappearing from the rack at the flagship Barneys New York store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. To customers, the incredibly soft and warmer-than-wool sweater is a must-have, even though most have no idea what the hangtag means by "Alpaca" or "Rogan."

Fast Talk Response -

You'd think! I've been to networking events or met new friends sans business cards -- it's as if I've committed a major social faux pas! Next to a driver's license, having a business card is probably the most grown-up ID a person can have.

Fast Talk Response -

Google Health, the search giant's foray into the electronic medical records space, is now in public beta. (Microsoft's HealthVault launched earlier this year.) The convenience of having a central repository of your health information online certainly makes sense in our hyper-digital lives -- why ask your doc about your condition when you can just google it? What makes corporate experiments like Google Health sketchy is the potential for the company to profit from your illness. Are you diabetic?

I think it comes down to the image you want to project to your co-workers. Do you want to be known for your state of (un)dress or your on-the-job ability? Not to say you couldn't be both incredibly skilled and provocatively dressed, but I'd rather not risk it as I'm building my career.

Women in Business Conference

The 2,000-plus businesswomen who will gather at this conference (June 23-26) are serious about networking -- featured prominently on the timetable are MatchMaker Meetings, a sort of speed dating for companies. They're also serious about business, if the keynoter is any sign. Chin-Ning Chu, author of The Art of War for Women, will teach attendees how to apply The Art of War, the famed sixth century B.C. military treatise by Sun Tzu, to the workplace.

World Economic Forum on Africa

Every year, the World Economic Forum holds a powwow focused on Africa, and every year, it's in Cape Town. Beautiful as the city may be, you have to wonder whether that's the only place in Africa to which the hundreds of attendees -- CEOs, ministers and heads of government, academics, assorted members of entourages -- will go. This year's theme, "Capitalizing on Opportunity," suggests the opportunity is for Africans.

In June 2008, WBENC will hold its 9th annual Women in Business conference in Atlanta, GA. This annual national conference and business fair is the largest event of its kind in the nation for women’s business enterprises (WBEs).
Wal-Mart annual Shareholders Meeting

Call it what you will: a pep rally, an old-fashioned Arkansas revival, a Peoples Temple brimming with Kool-Aid and those creepy Wal-Mart smiley faces. We still can't wait to see what kind of hoopla the WMT annual meeting generates this year, with the company's investors and employees expected to pack an 18,000-seat arena near its Bentonville headquarters. Sure, company executives will talk about revamping stores and boosting sales at a time when Wal-Mart's low- and middle-income customers are enduring rising gas prices and plunging consumer confidence.
