The value of Sister City relationships...

Recognizing the importance of creative capital to sustain local economies within the larger global market of the 21st century, the city of San Antonio seeks to foster international relationships with other cities. City officials here hope that sister city relations with Chennai will foster mutual economic benefits. Most likely that means in the IT and Biotech sectors. That also assumes that the business structures in either city are likely already in place. I am curious about opinions regarding structures that are in place to support creative exchange of ideas in through arts, design, and academic fields. Can anyone address the economic contribution of creative capital and industries to Chennai- and what is potential for creative exchange through Sister City status? - Robert

Thanks Karamala! Having visited Chennai in 1997 and finding a vibrant city with wonderful people, I knew I would get a response at some point....My question concerns more the medium for creative exchange and our readiness to utilize it. For instance, this internet forum that we are using now for discussion is primarily for the exchange of creative ideas. Sister City relationships are essentially govermental and diplomatic prompts and initiations for economic and cultural commerce. Are businesses, as well as those in the arts, design and academic fields prepared to build on this relationship? and in what ways evident so far?-keep the dream alive!- Robert

First signs of commerce made public in San Antonio reveal property development industry is poised to benefit:

This industry doesn't go without some contention here -in a city like San Antonio, where it seems that property rights trump the rights of the greater populace. Take for instance numerous and seemingly unstoppable projects developed over sensitive aquifer recharge zones which supply the drinking water for the area. Understanding and balancing needs for sustainable futures with economic growth requires us to learn each others issues and cultures better.
