Medical Travel & Tourism

| posted by James McCormick MD

This is a tremendous challenge to the current state of affairs in US healthcare. The opportunities presented by international healthcare will create tremendous change in our concept of how medical care can be provided. I leave for Asia to meet and tour several prominent individuals and facilities that host medical travel.

As a practicing US physician, the chance to view this coin from another angle has profound questions. It has radically changed my perspective on what we consider to be 'the best care'. It is impossible to argue that we in the US have a monopoly on the best in healthcare. Once that proposition is overcome, the discussion becomes very interesting.

Going forward, many large and smaller entities will swarm to this niche. Fortunately, our company will be at the head of the pack and ready to adapt, innovate and prosper.

More as I learn from abroad. As always posts and questions are welcome.

All I have are questions as I think Medical Tourism has merit. Ok, if it works in Thailand for the adventurous consumer, would the less adventurous consumer travel to say Arkansas, West Virginia, or New Mexico to realize the same type of savings on say a knee replacement? The next thought, would that caonsumer who would travel Nationally be satisfied at a 200 bed hospital, or only a major facility? Is the American Healthcare consumer ready for price shopping? I have wanted to implement this strategy for years, and I am about ready to seriously test the regional market. Albert Pilkington, Hospital CEO
